Chapter 8

Staci’s lungs burned. She wished she’d been on a better workout routine before coming to the mountains. She’d never thought she’d be running for her life above ten thousand feet.

The trees were great for cover and concealment but not so good for knowing where they were going. At least the ravine had them moving in one direction, not going around in circles.

Another thought pushed itself into her oxygen-deprived mind. Would the ravine lead to the floor of the valley? If so, would other valley men be waiting with their guns to shoot them as they emerged?

Staci tried not to think about that and focus instead on getting enough air into her lungs to keep up with Cole. She didn’t want to be the reason they were caught.

It wasn’t just her lungs burning. Her calves and thighs were on fire from all the running, climbing and navigating the steep sides of the ravine.

The more exhausted she became, the more she slipped and fell. Staci didn’t want to slow down or take a break. Her body could make that determination for her. She wasn’t sure how much longer she would last before she collapsed.

They came to a point where they had to cross another ravine that fed into the main one they had been following.

Cole leaped across the three-foot-wide expanse.

Staci stopped and stared at the gap, and then sighed and stepped down into the rocks rather than leaping across. Just as Cole reached down to grab her hand, she stepped on a loose stone, and it gave way and started the other rocks beneath it sliding down the ravine.

Staci pitched sideways and would have fallen except for the hand that grabbed hers and pulled her across and into Cole’s arms.

He crushed her to his chest and held her for a moment. Her heart raced pressed against his. “Thank you,” she said. She tipped her head backward and looked up into his deep brown eyes. “I’m sorry I’m slowing down.”

“It’s okay. We’re going to make it. You’re doing great.” He smiled down at her and pushed a strand of her hair back from her face, tucking it behind her ear. Then he bent and brushed his lips across her forehead. He leaned back and smiled down at her. “Hang in there.” Then he touched his lips to hers.

The electricity that sparked between them must have shocked him as much as it did her. He straightened, his eye flaring.

Her fingers curled into his shirt. Her racing heart now had nothing to do with running through the mountains. It had to do with a surge of desire burning through her veins. What was wrong with her? She should be running, hiding, moving. Instead, she stood still, staring up into this stranger’s eyes, willing him to kiss her again.

And he did.

This time he didn’t just brush his mouth across hers, he crushed her lips in a kiss that demanded a response from her.

She slid her hands up his chest and around his neck, bringing him closer, opening to him.
